Bridal Shower Favors with History

Expert AuthorFriends and family of the bride often give a bridal shower in the weeks before the wedding - complete with bridal shower favors - but why? Wouldn’t it be fun to tie bridal shower history into the bridal shower favors you give?

History of Bridal Showers

The history begins, they say, with a young Dutch couple, whom we will call Caleb and Rhonda. Caleb, a poor miller, was handsome, and a man of character. Lovely Rhonda also had character, but she was the daughter of a wealthy townsman, and her father had chosen a rich man as her groom.

Not knowing this, Caleb proposed, and Rhonda agreed. Excited and nervous, Caleb went to ask for her hand in marriage, but the father obstinately refused. He forbade Caleb to see Rhonda, and vowed to disown her, withholding even her dowry, if she married the miller.

Rhonda was beside herself. She loved her father, and was sad at the rift between them, but she loved Caleb more. The two decided to marry even though they would have almost nothing with which to set up housekeeping.

Now the townspeople decided to help Caleb and Rhonda, and formed a plan. No one had much, but all could give something so the next day, having made sure Caleb and Rhonda were together, they gathered at the miller’s cottage bearing gifts. There were cooking utensils, pillows, coverlets, dishes, and much more. Everyone was so happy that the parade of gifts turned into a party.

Rhonda’s father, hearing the party from the other end of town, hurried to the miller’s cottage to see what was happening. When he saw what the people had done, he hung his head in shame. Embracing his daughter, he announced that he was giving the young couple a fine new house.

Then, to thank the town for showering so many gifts on Rhonda and Caleb, the father invited everyone in town to a great banquet to celebrate the marriage. Since that time, it is said, bridal showers have celebrated Caleb and Rhonda’s love and the goodness of the townspeople.
